My Favorite Thing
Wednesday, August 21, 2019 by CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP OF CHESTER COUNTY

“What is your favorite part of camp?” That question often comes to campers from behind the lens of a video camera at Camp Good News. Their answers can be anything from “the Bible story” to “lunch time!” In the past few weeks, as I worked on unpacking camp supplies and compiling summer statistics, I re-read my notes from camp and was reminded of my answers to this question.
A camper came to quote her favorite memory verse to me (for bonus points!). She said it was her favorite because anytime something was hard to do, she just thought of this verse, and, “Well, there ya’ have it!” The verse was Philippians 4:13.
An older camper shared her most important prayer request with a leader. It was that her mother would learn about Jesus.
A returning camper told a counselor that he was glad he had believed in Jesus last year at camp. He shared that it’s still hard to do right, but in times when he was really hurting, Jesus helped him.
Another boy wanted to know how you can know for sure that you’ve believed.
Some campers have been in our ministry for years, both in camp and Good News Club. When a counselor asked one of these kiddos if he had ever trusted Jesus, his answer was, “Oh yes, I’ve believed that for a long time.” He also assured the counselor that he still had the Bible that he had been given at Good News Club.
Another camper prayed with a counselor to put his trust in Jesus and then asked, “Is this gonna’ go on TV?” He was quite disappointed at the “no” answer, but the counselor said he was “super excited about Jesus!”
And then there was the Kiddie Camper who we’ve known and loved since Kindergarten, who grew in his understanding this summer to be absolutely sure that Jesus is the only way to Heaven. After praying with a counselor, he ran out tell his team leader—he wanted to be sure she knew and believed in Jesus too.
So, what is my favorite part of Camp Good News? The staff, the volunteers, the stories, the kids, or—as one camper put it–“All of it!”
